DAVID  ARNOLD   -   FILM  COMPOSER

Wikipedia:

"While attending a Sixth Form College in Luton, Arnold became friends with director Danny Cannon.[1] Danny initially created short films for which David was asked to write the music. The two made their respective major film debuts with The Young Americans. "Play Dead", a song from the film with singer Björk, charted #12 in the UK. The following year he scored Stargate and Last of the Dogmen, with excerpts from the former ranking third in the most commonly used soundtrack cues for film trailers.[2]

Arnold would then go on to compose music for Stargate director Roland Emmerich's next two movies, Independence Day and Godzilla, as well as four movies for director John Singleton. In addition, he has also scored various comedies, dramas, and nineteenth-century period pieces, as well as providing music for several British television shows including the 2000 remake of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Little Britain. During film production, his compositions are conducted by Nicholas Dodd. In 2010, he composed the music for Come Fly With Me, a British television series from the producers of Little Britain"  |  More on Wikipedia  |

Wikipedia: Composition

Musical composition can refer to an original piece of music, the structure of a musical piece, or the process of creating a new piece of music. People who practice composition are called composers.

A piece of music exists in the form of a written composition in musical notation or as a single acoustic event (a live performance or recorded track). If composed before being performed, music can be performed from memory, through written musical notation, or through a combination of both. Compositions comprise musical elements, which vary widely from person to person and between cultures. Improvisation is the act of composing during the performance, assembling musical elements spontaneously.

The composition of a work is generally called its musical form.  These techniques draw a parallel to art's formal elements.  Sometimes, the entire form of a piece is through-composed,  meaning that each part is different,  with no repetition of sections;  Other forms include strophic, rondo, verse-chorus, or other parts. Some pieces are composed around a set scale,  where the compositional technique might be considered the usage of a particular scales.

Others are composed during performance (see improvisation),  where a variety of techniques are also sometimes used.   Some are used from particular songs which are familiar.

In discussing the structure or organization of a musical work, the composition of that work is generally called its musical form. These techniques draw a parallel to art's formal elements. Sometimes, the entire form of a piece is through-composed, meaning that each part is different, with no repetition of sections; other forms include strophic, rondo, verse-chorus, or other parts. Some pieces are composed around a set scale, where the compositional technique might be considered the usage of a particular scale. Others are composed during performance (see improvisation), where a variety of techniques are also sometimes used. Some are used from particular songs which are familiar.

People who practice composition are called composers. Compositional techniques are the methods used to create music. Useful skills in composition include writing musical notation, music theory, instrumentation, and handling musical ensembles (orchestration). Other skills include extended techniques such as improvisation, musical montage, preparing instruments, using non-traditional instruments, and other methods of sound production.

Berklee School of Music  -  Major in Composition

The student majoring in composition will study tonal harmony, counterpoint and fugue, tonal composition, twentieth-century compositional techniques, instrumentation, and orchestration. Music literature studied will emphasize the concert music repertoire of the twentieth century, but also will include principal composers and styles from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. The student will demonstrate mastery of these skills and concepts as well as the development of an individual compositional personality and voice, by completing a portfolio of scores that will include (but not be limited to) a number of pieces in smaller forms, a tonal four-part fugue, a composition for solo voice or mixed chorus, a sonata in three movements, and a composition for full orchestra.

The study of acknowledged masterpieces from different historical periods will develop in the student an individual aesthetic vision and the critical ability to recognize and discuss music of quality. The student will gain skills by working with performers, rehearsing them, and conducting and/or producing performances.

The composition major will develop sufficient skills and knowledge to function as a composer of concert music and to gain entry to a graduate program in music theory or composition in order to pursue a career as a teacher, scholar, an practitioner of music theory and composition.

Improvisation

Music Improvisation  @  Wikipedia

Musical improvisation is the spontaneous creative process of making music while it is being performed. Improvisation exists in
almost all music, but is closely associated with particular genres such as blues, jazz, bluegrass, the Taqsim of Arabic and
Turkish music, Indonesian gamelan, and Indian classical music. To use a linguistic analogy, improvisation is like speaking or having
a conversation as opposed to reciting a written text. Among jazz musicians there is an adage, "improvisation is composition
speeded up," and vice versa, "composition is improvisation slowed down."

Noteflight.com

"Noteflight was founded with the vision of making it simple for everyone to create and share musical ideas online. We started by
building a place where individuals could create, view, hear and print musical scores. We established a community where our users
could invite others to view, collaborate and comment. We discovered that music educators and instructors were excited about
what we were doing, so we developed Noteflight Learning Edition. We are constantly finding new opportunities in partnering with
others. And as we continue learning about new ways that people are using Noteflight, we are constantly introducing new features."
