| The
Music Of Jeffery Cotton / Blog |
| "That's
the wonderful thing about the internet: I can express myself as I wish
to all the world, in full confidence that even fewer people than usual
will pay attention." | " This is a list of essays and
commentaries
by Jeffery Cotton.
Some
of these were written by request, others are expanded versions of
program
notes, other simply rants." |

| Pierre
Boulez in conversation with Joshua Cody |
| Few
would have imagined upon hearing the premiere of Pierre Boulez's 1956
work
Le Marteau sans maître, a stunningly violent setting of poetry by
René Char, that this most iconoclastic of European avant-garde
composers
would one day be conducting the great orchestras of the world.
It is this tension between two personae—on the one hand, the most
revolutionary
aesthetician since Schoenberg; on the other, a reconciler, the
bourgeois
apologist for the extremes of the avant-garde—that have made him the
most
important figure in postwar classical music.

| Construal
of Musical Process Architecture |
| We
have perhaps become used to certain ways of articulating time in music
as composers, performers and listeners. Principally this is a
function
of the archetypal forms that we have learnt to manipulate through a
variety
of technical means. It is also a function of
duration.
Both these elements are central to many of the received structures of
musical
expression we have learnt and this acceptance is an assumption which
needs
addressing. By way of an example, how many single movement
pieces lasting over an hour can you name? How many lasting about ten
minutes?

Serialism overview (Princeton) |
| Ideas
inherited by Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, Heri Pousseur, and other
fellow
composers in the 1950's from earlier composers and teachers like Arnold
Schoenberg Oliver Messiaen and especially Anton von Webern led to the
style
of compositional experimentation known in the literature as total or
integral
serialism. | In ",,how time passes..." ([Stockhausen1957]),
Stockhausen
frequently speaks of "serial principles", or the application of the
"serial
system" to a given set of elements of musical material | Yet these
principles,
and this system, are never defined by him | |

Since groups of the constraints are related, I've put them here
