| Recombinant
music composition algorithm and method of using the same |
| "The
present invention provides a retrograde recombinant composition algorithm
that creates new musical compositions based on existing musical compositions
that are preferably written in software and is suitable for implementation
in electro-mechanical and electronic devices that generate musical works
based on existing bodies of music. The retrograde approach to recomposition
according to the present invention provides a highly simplified code that
executes at a high speed, and accordingly a reduced need for computational
resources. (end of abstract) " |

| Interactive
music composition and performance system |
| "An
interactive music composition and performance system is a real-time composing
and sound-producing system which employs a synthesizer, a programmable
computer, and at least one performance device and which functions automatically
to generate controls which determine the course of the musical composition
it plays as well as the nature of the sound it produces. The system is
interactive in that a user can direct aspects of the system's production
of music, as he or she hears it being produced, by use of a performance
device. If the user does not provide an input, the system proceeds automatically
to compose music and produce sound." |

| The
History of Algorithmic Composition |
| Introduction
- "Since I have always preferred making plans to executing
them, I have gravitated towards situations and systems that, once set into
operation, could create music with little or no intervention on my part.
That is to say, I tend towards the roles of planner and programmer, and
then become an audience to the results" -Brian Eno (Alpern, 1995). " |

| Interactive
music composition with the CFE framework |
| "This
article presents an interactive music composition system which utilizes
the black-box optimization model of evolutionary computation. The core
CFE framework---Composition, Feedback, and Evolution---is presented and
described. The music composition system produces short, manageable pieces
of music by interacting with users. The essential features of the system
include the capability of creating customized pieces of music based on
the user preference and the facilities specifically designed for generating
a large amount of music. Finally, several pieces of music composed by the
described system are demonstrated as showcases. This work shows that it
is feasible and promising for computers to automatically compose customized
or personalized music." |

| Bruce
L Jacob: Composing with Genetic Algorithms |
| "Contemporary
algorithmic composition ranges from traditional stochastic methods seen
in M and Jam Factory (Zicarelli, D.) to complex rule-based systems such
as EMI (Cope, D. 1987, 1992) and Cypher (Rowe, R.). This paper describes
a composition process that combines the best of these two extremes, achieving
the simplicity of a stochastic process and the determinism of a rule-based
system. " |

Essl: Music Software |
| "This
page contains computer programs that has been developed by Karlheinz Essl
as tools for composition, live performance and sound design. Based on concepts
of realtime and algorithmic composition - a field of research in which
Essl is working since 1985 - they are tailored towards the needs of musicians
who are interested in generative music, randomness and indeterminacy." |
